A Weekend in NYC with NYU Steinhardt

Shortly after moving to Berkeley, I spent a weekend in NYC for a networking event with NYU Steinhardt and the Faculty First-Look Program. The event brought together members of the 2024 cohort of FFL scholars, alumni of the program, and faculty from the College for one day of academic programming, discussions, and networking.

UCLA cohort members (L to R): Rogelio Salazar, Tim Herd, Lena Wang

I previously reflected on the virtual FFL program in March, which covered the basics of the academic job market, including the preparation of application materials and research presentation skills to offer negotiations. We discussed the current political landscape that developed since the spring and how it is affecting the job market at NYU and celebrated the accomplishments and milestones of cohort members. Other highlights of the in-person event included a critical discussion of AI in teaching through a lens of environmental racism, a scavenger hunt around the Washington Square Park/Greenwich Village area, and an evening reception. I also caught up with friends and colleagues from my graduate program and got to build new relationships with cohort members.

Mahalo nui to NYU Steinhardt FFL and program director Maria Williamson for taking care of cohort members and supporting us in our academic journeys.
